Imove London is all about helping you minimise the stress of your move. So start here with our free moving checklist, full of tips to help you plan your move and assist you in ensuring you think of everything ahead of the big day, and in good time.
Before you start gathering up your possessions, gather your thoughts. It makes no difference if you’re moving from Dulwich or Dollis Hill; plan ahead, get organised and you’ll find the whole task much easier.
One month before your move:
- contact the telephone company, broadband and cable TV suppliers to set up connections or installations, and diverts you may need
- inform the utility suppliers that you will be moving, and of your move date at both your old and new homes
- plan and book the time you will need off work
- contact local authorities regarding council tax, and parking permits at both old and new addresses
- start sifting your belongings: it’s good to start three piles in each room, labelled: Keep, Toss out, and Store
Two weeks before your move:
- confirm dates with your moving company – by email or text, not just verbally
- think about who will need to know your change of address and start a list – check all your incoming mail against this requirement
- contact the Royal Mail regarding mail holding or forwarding
- think about who might look after children and pets on the day
- start packing those things you won’t need until after moving day
- cancel regular deliveries such as milk, newspapers etc
One week before you move:
- confirm arrangements with utility companies
- arrange exchange of keys, and obtain your new ones
- prepare map of new location for moving company, and any tradesmen
- decide which rooms will be which in your new place
- consider what you will need to put into store
The day before you move:
- seal and label packing boxes
- if possible, move boxes towards the loading point, for example into the garage
- pack a bag or box of emergency supplies
- defrost the fridge and freezer
On the day:
- disconnect any remaining appliances, pack and label connecting cables
- close and lock doors and windows
- take final meter readings
- lights off on the way out!
- Prepare to account for arrivals at the destination
